In the beginning of the 16th century the Archbishop of St Andrews, Andrew Forman, granted leases of the barony of Tynninghame to Sir Robert Lauder of the Bass for 19 years from 1517. In 1560 James Stewart granted to Robert Lawder of the Bass a lease of the lands, lordship or barony. The family of Lauder also acquired the lands of Knollis or Knowes from a family of that name. The Laird and Ladie Bass sold Tynninghame to John Murray, Lord Annandale, for 200,000 merks in June 1621, who six years later sold, for same price, to the first Earl of Haddington. Knowes is still in the possession of the Earls of Haddington. Many tenants have farmed the lands; the Faa’s (Falls) and Pringles in the 17th century; Shirreff and Hunters in the 18th and from 1943 by the Cochrans.":17,"Newmains was once part of the Newbythe estate. Mr Charles Lambert Snr acquired the farm in November 1918. Mr Lambert Jnr was interviewed as part of ELA&FN Society’s Field Names work in 1993. See Transactions Vol 23, published 1996, for the record. Now farmed by Noreen, Great Granddaughter, and her husband, Tony Metcalfe. A farm plan of 1803 (RHP6011) was examined during the 1993 work but it did not record any field names. The north and south boundaries of the farm are mostly defined by the Pilmur and Peffer Burns. New Mains is a common farm name in East Lothian. Three unnamed areas of wood to N and W of house are numbered 7-8-9 on Farmer’s list of fields. These are not recorded here so field numbers jump from 6 to 10. Nothing missing":14,"Originally part of Yester Estate. Has now been farmed by three generations of Weddells":13,"Originally two farms, they were combined after 1997.The farm is rich in wildlife due to the wide use of hedges backed by mixed wildlife cover strips providing feed and nectar.":18,"Phantassie and Linton farms were the property of the Earls of Aberdeen until 1803 when purchased by George Rennie, noted agriculturalist. The birthplace of John Rennie engineer. The Linton farm fields are those fields to the west on the River Tyne; these were farmed separately between 1768 and 1787. For the story of the Rennie family at Phantassie see ELA&FNS Transactions Vol 29 (2013). The farm is now the property of Hamilton Farmers. The farms are divided by the A199 (old A1 road), the East Coast railway and the new A1 dual carriageway built c2000. A previous field names report for the farm was published in 1996.
