Also reported was that if you dig a hole anywhere around the steading in winter it will probably fill up with water. The underlying rock is volcanic so impermeable. Any water which does not enter the field drains will continue down through the soil profile till it comes to this impermeable layer then flow slowly downhill. There are several springs. Nigel Tranter, Scots historian and author who lived close by, incorporated Mungoswells into the novel Druid Sacrifice.":21,"Newmains was once part of the Newbythe estate. Mr Charles Lambert Snr acquired the farm in November 1918. Mr Lambert Jnr was interviewed as part of ELA&FN Society’s Field Names work in 1993. New Mains is a common farm name in East Lothian. Three unnamed areas of wood to N and W of house are numbered 7-8-9 on Farmer’s list of fields.
