Every January, even as he entered his tenth decade, WP is said to have baked his own birthday cake. He also invented a bakers’ oven, which he patented and called the Hubbard Oven.\n\nA new park slated for the grounds out in front of the Bridgepoint hospital at Broadview and Gerrard will be named after Hubbard. It’s a dedication heavy in historical irony. Our current mayor stoops to use the n-word, a slur rarely used in Hubbard’s presence as he forged his political career in a 1800s Toronto mostly populated by pale people protecting their turf from “foreigners.”\n\nThe park named after him will symbolically border Chinatown east where in the late 19th century Chinese residents’ only viable means of making a living was running restaurants or hand laundries. When white affluent shop owners wanted to drive the Chinese launderers out of business by demanding the city charge them high licensing fees, Hubbard vehemently opposed them.\n\nWhile hand laundries are a thing of the past, bigotry and racial stereotyping are not, most glaringly evident in our current mayor’s denigration of people of Italian, Jewish and African descent.\n\nBut in the late 1800s, Hubbard as acting mayor was appealing to council for better treatment of the city’s Jewish community asking that “steps be taken to prohibit attacks being made on the Jewish religion”\n\nOf his own race Hubbard wrote: “I have always felt that I am the representative of a race hitherto despised but if given a fair opportunity would be able to command esteem.”\n\nBack then, however, Blacks had little in the way of fair opportunity in Toronto. They could be porters, factory workers, labourers but mostly their numbers were too small to make any political difference.\n\nA hundred years should have changed all that but Torontonians currently live with a mayor who not only disparages minorities but votes against shelters for the homeless and LGBTQ youth. And here there’s another Hubbard connection.\n\nIn 1860, Toronto’s first homeless shelter opened next to the future site of Hubbard Park. Called The House of Refuge, it was a home for “the vagrant, the dissolute, and idiots.” That’s a quote from 1860, not Rob Ford.\n\nFor years Hubbard sat on the Board of the House of Industry on Elm Street, railing against those who claimed the city’s unemployed were shiftless good-for-nothings. As a boy Hubbard and his family of seven siblings lived for a time in the caretaker’s quarters in the Phoebe Street School, where his father was caretaker.\n\nBy the time Hubbard took office in the late 1890s his first-hand experience had given him a lifelong empathy for the plight of the needy. He would never be monied enough to consider replacing public policy with personal patronage, like some mayors we know. His mission was always hard work and dedication as when he petitioned the province for Toronto’s legal right to acquire land to be used for city parks.\n\nWhen the then privately-owned High Park was donated to the city, he fought councillors who voted against accepting the gift.\n\nHe kept up the battle for the thoughtful acquisition of parkland, commenting: “Many years ago the city of Toronto was so desirous to obtain railways that we gave away, almost for a song, the whole of our beautiful waterfront to the railways.”\n\nIn 1935 William Peyton Hubbard was on record as Toronto’s oldest native born inhabitant. He was 93 and he died that same year.\n\nWhenever you hear the big bell at Old City Hall chime out the hour (prick up your ears, Mayor Ford), think on the man whose name is inscribed on it as someone who had a genuine affinity for the underdog and a devotion to bettering the quality of life for the citizens of Toronto.\n\nAnd when finally you sit on a bench in Hubbard Park, consider – as he did – what Toronto could be.","radius":null,"radiusDisplayUnit":null,"hasLongDescription":true,"color":"#448C2A","locked":false,"mapImageId":"5f2bd76f-39db-4ed5-b265-a3b21b611808","coordinates":[[[43.673803,-79.356988],[43.673814,-79.356965],[43.673857,-79.356874],[43.673876,-79.356857],[43.67389,-79.356824],[43.673649,-79.356603],[43.673285,-79.35627],[43.673273,-79.35626],[43.673263,-79.356257],[43.67322,-79.356217],[43.673173,-79.356174],[43.673171,-79.356163],[43.673161,-79.356141],[43.673085,-79.356065],[43.672948,-79.355925],[43.672823,-79.355796],[43.672705,-79.355677],[43.672619,-79.355592],[43.672499,-79.355475],[43.672387,-79.355376],[43.672314,-79.355308],[43.672231,-79.355237],[43.67216,-79.35518],[43.672036,-79.355084],[43.672013,-79.355066],[43.671907,-79.354994],[43.671877,-79.354971],[43.671851,-79.354952],[43.671742,-79.354883],[43.671629,-79.354814],[43.671444,-79.354708],[43.671238,-79.3546],[43.671069,-79.354498],[43.67094,-79.354415],[43.670861,-79.354355],[43.670804,-79.354311],[43.670719,-79.354236],[43.670636,-79.354156],[43.670497,-79.354028],[43.670401,-79.353942],[43.670323,-79.353866],[43.670289,-79.353854],[43.670169,-79.353738],[43.670014,-79.353592],[43.669867,-79.35346],[43.669747,-79.353344],[43.669633,-79.353239],[43.669576,-79.353197],[43.669519,-79.353164],[43.669462,-79.353133],[43.669397,-79.353106],[43.669357,-79.353095],[43.669296,-79.353089],[43.669262,-79.353087],[43.669197,-79.353089],[43.669028,-79.353113],[43.668782,-79.353148],[43.668623,-79.353169],[43.668546,-79.353182],[43.6685,-79.353191],[43.668455,-79.353209],[43.668375,-79.353239],[43.668251,-79.35329],[43.66798,-79.353394],[43.667931,-79.353414],[43.667792,-79.353472],[43.667686,-79.353512],[43.667617,-79.353539],[43.667565,-79.353551],[43.667538,-79.353553],[43.667484,-79.353551],[43.667437,-79.353545],[43.667406,-79.353532],[43.667316,-79.3535],[43.667226,-79.353459],[43.667206,-79.353446],[43.666889,-79.353314],[43.666859,-79.353328],[43.666745,-79.353836],[43.666677,-79.353812],[43.666607,-79.353786],[43.666586,-79.353884],[43.666185,-79.353713]],[[43.666185,-79.353713],[43.666079,-79.353668],[43.66605,-79.353656],[43.666018,-79.353738],[43.665985,-79.353787],[43.665908,-79.353921],[43.665869,-79.354009],[43.665841,-79.354108],[43.665826,-79.354177]],[[43.665826,-79.354177],[43.665704,-79.354726],[43.665683,-79.354811],[43.665658,-79.354915],[43.66556,-79.355365],[43.665507,-79.355339],[43.665459,-79.355317],[43.66548,-79.355251],[43.665607,-79.354685],[43.665653,-79.354487],[43.665602,-79.35439],[43.665574,-79.354301],[43.665563,-79.354221],[43.665562,-79.354151],[43.665571,-79.354094],[43.665595,-79.354082]]],"routeMode":"WALKING","icon":null,"mapLinkId":null,"rotation":null,"symbol":null,"scale":null,"clipSource":null,"widthScale":1},{"label":null,"id":"30ecbb88-5579-478c-b844-60849e92886a","showEndcaps":true,"textStyle":null,"type":"Path","strokeOpacity":1,"size":null,"strokeWidth":4,"position":null,"text":"The Mary Ann Shadd Cary Archives inscribed in the Canada Memory of the World Register\n\nhttps://en.ccunesco.ca/about-ccunesco/press/2023/09/mary-ann-shadd-cary-memory-of-the-world\nOttawa, September 25, 2023 - Archives of Ontario, Library and Archives Canada and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO are pleased to announce that the Mary Ann Shadd Cary archives have been added to the Canada Memory of the World Register. UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme highlights the most significant elements of the world’s documentary heritage, while the Canadian Register showcases documentary heritage of national significance.\n\nMary Ann Shadd Cary is a key figure in Black history in Canada - she was the first Black woman in North America to publish a newspaper and one of the first women journalists in Canada. Born free in 1823 in Wilmington, Delaware Mary Ann Shadd Cary’s parents were active abolitionists and her childhood home was a safe house on the Underground Railroad.\n\nShe came to Canada in 1851, following the passage of the US Fugitive Slave Act (1850) and established a racially integrated school in Windsor, Ontario. In 1853 she founded The Provincial Freeman, a weekly newspaper that promoted the abolition of slavery, featured articles from prominent African American abolitionists, publicized the successes of Black refugees living in freedom in Canada, and promoted Black emigration to Canada.\n\nThese archival records are one of the most significant collections of material in North America about Mary Ann Shadd Cary’s life and work. They include correspondence and notes that provide a first-person account of her work and the abolitionist movement at a critical point in its history, capturing the energy and ideas that permeated her work as an educator and as editor of The Provincial Freeman as well as her thinking around anti-slavery, Black equality and women’s rights.\n\nQuote\nAs highlighted in our recent report Black Canadians and Public Education: A scan of elementary and secondary social studies curricula – too few Canadians grow up learning about important figures in Canada’s Black history and the experiences of Black people in Canada. This collection provides the means for writing and teaching a more inclusive history of Canada, offering a Black woman’s viewpoint on the important anti-slavery activities that took place in pre-Confederation Canada.\n– Yves-Gérard Méhou-Loko, Secretary General, Canadian Commission for UNESCO\n\nQuote\nThe archival records of Mary Ann Shadd Cary reflect a transnational story demonstrating the strength, intelligence, and perseverance of a reporter, advocate, and community member at a time of immense social and cultural change. The near loss of some of these records in 1974, and their donation to a public institution, reminds us about the significance of our shared documentary heritage and the necessity of its preservation.\n– Cody Groat, Chair, Canadian Advisory Committee for Memory of the World\n\nQuote\nMary Ann Shadd Cary fought for freedom for her people using her writing, journalism and through her public speaking and engagement. In so doing, she set the blueprint for Black and women journalists for generations to come. She played a significant role in promoting Canada as a place for Blacks to settle, but she also put Canadian officialdom on notice that the Black community expected to be treated equally under the law. In a world largely shaped by the words and actions of men, she was a unique female voice for the ages.\n– Adrienne Shadd, Historian, author and descendant of Mary Ann Shadd Cary\n\nQuote\nThe Mary Ann Shadd Cary collection provides valuable insight into her life and efforts as an abolitionist, feminist, journalist, and educator through which we are able to gain a deeper understanding of the complex networks of activism and communication among activists, both Black and white, and the freedom movement on both sides of the Canada-United States border. Her records are also important evidentiary materials on the mid-19th century transnational Black intellectual history. The digital availability of this collection will provide educators and students worldwide with rich, informative primary sources to critically examine Black history in Canada and the United States. It is fitting to memorialize Mary Ann Shadd Cary and her work in this way because she had a significant impact on the lives of Black people in Canada, in North America, and in world history.\n– Natasha Henry-Dixon, Assistant Professor of African Canadian History, York University\n\nAbout UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme\nUNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme was initiated in 1992 to safeguard the world’s documentary heritage. The programme promotes universal access to materials with scientific, educational, aesthetic and cultural value, protecting them from the destructive forces of war, social upheaval, and other natural and human-caused disasters.\n\nThe Canada Memory of the World Register, administered by the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, provides universal access to our artistic, cultural, economic, geographic, linguistic, political, scientific, spiritual and identity-based heritage. It also highlights the importance of making these unique collections accessible to students, researchers and the general public.\n\nAbout the Canadian Commission for UNESCO\nThe Canadian Commission for UNESCO (CCUNESCO) serves as a bridge between Canadians and the vital work of UNESCO—the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Alexander Honoured With Queen’s Park Sculpture\nhttps://byblacks.com/news/item/3353-canada-s-first-black-federal-cabinet-minister-lincoln-m-alexander-honoured-with-queen-s-park-sculpture\n\nCommunity partner organization Licensed to Learn and diversity, equity, and inclusion consultant Rosemary Sadlier are working to ensure that the memory of the Hon. Lincoln Alexander, the first Black man to serve as a viceregal in Canada, is carried forward through the generations.\n\nIn December of 2014, it was decided that January 21st was to be observed as Lincoln Alexander Day across Canada, celebrating the birthday and the life of Lincoln M. Alexander, the first ever Black Member of Parliament, federal Cabinet Minister, and Lieutenant Governor in Canadian History.\n\n“It’s not just a saying, it’s a reality: if we want kids to be it, they have to see it,” Rosemary Sadlier says, explaining what is achievable by installing the bust on the second floor in Queen Park’s Legislative Assembly building.\n\n“I, myself, was very much touched by having been invited to Queen’s Park when Lincoln Alexander, early in his days as a Lieutenant Governor, reached out to the Black community and I had the opportunity to go. There are many things that spur you on, but certainly seeing him in that place made it seem more possible that people who look like me could be in that place. I think that bust can provide students who come through on school tours, visitors who come into the building with a source of and a place to affirm the history of Queen’s Park that includes a man of African origin, and who became the first Black vice regal in Canada. A symbol can be very useful; this, I think, will be an incredibly powerful symbol for our community.”\n\nLincoln Alexander, who passed away in October of 2012 at age 90, has left a long track record and legacy of success pushing past the barriers that have oppressed Canada’s Black population. Over the course of his career as a student, Air Force assembly line worker, lawyer, and politician, he inspired and often encouraged education and perseverance in the community as noted in the title of his memoir: Go To School, You’re A Little Black Boy. Three schools in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area carry the name of Lincoln Alexander, as well as a few community centers and institutions, and a highway.\n\nThe bust will be the first sculpture of a Black figure installed in Queen’s Park. “I don’t know if my grandfather was an exception in certain ways, but people of every kind of background gravitated towards him mainly because of his personality,” says Erika Alexander, who represents her grandfather at public events since his death. “I think with this coming to fruition it’s a great start towards the beginning of other projects that can be done on other Black figures in Canada to recognize them. I think it’s important.”\n\nThere is still resistance to Black community advancement and progression still present now, as pointed out by Sadlier, who was awarded the Order of Ontario for her work to have formal commemorations and nationwide celebrations of Black History Month and Emancipation Day.\n“People are still shocked and surprised that Black people have done anything in this country. The idea that Black people have been in this country since before Confederation is not well known or well appreciated, and certainly not shared. You can be a really good person and a really knowledgeable person, and still fail to have learned anything about Black history at school.”\n\nThe bust is expected to be unveiled in January 2024 near the suite of the Lieutenant Governor, which is attached to the Legislative Assembly building in Queen’s Park. They settled in Toronto in the 1830s after fleeing slavery in the United States.\n\nTORONTO – George Brown College announced today the new Lucie and Thornton Blackburn Conference Centre at their student residence, The George.\n\nLucie and Thornton Blackburn settled in Toronto in the 1830s after fleeing slavery in the United States via the Underground Railroad. As community leaders, philanthropists and anti-slavery activists, the Blackburns also started Toronto’s first taxi-cab company and were among the founders of the Trinity Church on King Street. Their family home was once located just across the street from the conference centre now named in their honour.\n\n “We are delighted to be honouring the important legacy of Lucie and Thornton Blackburn at our new conference centre,” remarked Anne Sado, President of George Brown College. “The Blackburns were contemporaries of our namesake, George Brown, and together worked on anti-slavery initiatives. In many ways, their story mirrors our own commitment to supporting the aspirations of a remarkably diverse student body by instilling in them the values of entrepreneurship, activism and leadership.”\n\nLocated adjacent to the college’s first student residence at Front and Cherry Streets in Corktown, the Lucie and Thornton Blackburn Conference Centre is open for bookings, featuring over 4,500 square feet, capacity for 217 people seated in a table format and a bar pre-function space as well as two separate meeting lounges.\n\n “This is a proud moment for all of us. The Blackburns’ story teaches people of all backgrounds the values of courage and determination. The mural is a beautiful vehicle to share this narrative and the Conference Centre a collaborative space to promote the exchange of ideas.” said, Nikki Clarke, President of the Ontario Black History Society (OBHS).\n\nFor 49 years, George Brown College has woven itself into of the fabric of Toronto, celebrated its history and contributed as a partner in its success. These close ties with the community led to the dedication of the new conference centre to the Blackburn family and their legacy.\n\nThe project quickly evolved to include educational activities, artifact exhibits, theatrical performances, a panel discussion and the creation of an interactive mural - designed by three George Brown students - that tells the compelling Lucie and Thornton Blackburn story. A listing of events and activities are listed below, including an Open House for the public on November 10 from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm.\n\nGeorge Brown College and the Ontario Black History Society would like to thank the following sponsors and donors who made The Lucie and Thornton Blackburn Conference Centre a reality:\n\nCity of Toronto\nGovernment of Canada\nUrban Capital\nDenham Jolly\nAllan Slaight\nThe William and Nona Heaslip Foundation\nCampus Living Centre","radius":null,"radiusDisplayUnit":null,"hasLongDescription":true,"color":"#2674BA","locked":false,"mapImageId":null,"coordinates":[43.653103,-79.357924],"routeMode":null,"icon":null,"mapLinkId":null,"rotation":null,"symbol":"dot","scale":null,"clipSource":null,"widthScale":1},{"label":null,"id":"c46f1769-1411-4961-add7-57e4e347c7b7","showEndcaps":null,"textStyle":null,"type":"Link","strokeOpacity":null,"size":null,"strokeWidth":null,"position":null,"text":"Prominent Black Canadians remembered in Toronto history","isHidden":null,"zoom":null,"strokeStyle":null,"parentId":null,"showArea":null,"radiusDisplayAngle":90,"textAlign":null,"opacity":null,"attributes":[],"isTextHidden":null,"hideFromLegend":null,"createdAtUnixTimeMs":1721562291000,"ordering":1719839989935971,"author":"b9751725-5fdf-409a-acaf-2f5caa2f5ad0","fillOpacity":null,"isCollapsed":null,"onClick":null,"showRadius":null,"showLength":null,"showLinkPreview":true,"description":"Toronto's Necropolis Cemetery holds the remains of many prominent Black Canadians.
