Intact Forest Landscape (IFL) is an unbroken expanse of natural ecosystems within the current forest\nextent, with no remotely detected signs of human activity, and large enough that all native biodiversity,\nincluding viable populations of wide-ranging species, could be maintained. For our global assessment, an\nIFL is defined as a territory that contains forest and non-forest ecosystems minimally influenced by\nhuman activity, with (i) an area of at least 500 km 2 (50,000 ha), (ii) a minimum width of 10 km\n(measured as the diameter of a circle that could be entirely inscribed within the boundaries of the\nterritory), and (iii) a minimum corridor/appendage width of 2 km. Areas with evidence of certain types\nof human influence are considered disturbed or fragmented and consequently not eligible for inclusion\nin the IFL. Specifically, we excluded from the IFL areas which in the last 30-70 years were affected by\nindustrial activities (e.g. logging, mining, oil and gas exploration and extraction) or by stand-replacement\nfires in the vicinity of transport infrastructure or resource extraction sites, or which were cleared for\nagriculture or transformed into tree plantations. Settlements and infrastructure (including roads,\nnavigable rivers, power lines, and pipelines) are excluded with a buffer zone of 1 km. Low-intensity and\nold (> 70 years) disturbances are treated as a \"\"background\"\" influence and don’t lead to exclusion of the\narea from the IFL. Sources of background influence include historic (abandoned) shifting cultivation\nactivities, diffuse grazing by domestic animals, low-intensity selective logging (without road\ninfrastructure), and hunting. Although all IFLs are located within the forest zone (present-day extent of\nforest ecosystem distribution), some may contain extensive naturally tree-less areas, including\ngrasslands, wetlands, lakes, alpine areas, and ice, if they are surrounded by forests.\n\nIFL mapping and monitoring rely on freely available medium spatial resolution satellite imagery (Landsat\nand Sentinel-2), high spatial resolution imagery (available through Google Earth (TM) platform and through\nNICFI Program), and open access infrastructure and settlement maps. The IFL concept and mapping\nmethod were developed by a group of research and environmental organizations (Greenpeace,\nUniversity of Maryland, World Resources Institute, and Transparent World) and have been used both in\nregional and global forest monitoring and research projects. represents a series of vectorized polygon layers that depict sub-basin boundaries at a global scale. The goal of this product is to provide a seamless global coverage of consistently sized and hierarchically nested sub-basins at different scales (from tens to millions of square kilometers), supported by a coding scheme that allows for analysis of catchment topology such as up- and downstream connectivity. HydroBASINS has been extracted from the gridded HydroSHEDS core layers at 15 arc-second resolution.\nDepiction of nested sub-basin delineations\n\nAn important characteristic of any sub-basin delineation is the sub-basin breakdown, i.e. the decision of when and how to subdivide a larger basin into multiple tributary basins. At its highest level of sub-basin breakdown, HydroBASINS divides a basin into two sub-basins at every location where two river branches meet which each have an individual upstream area of at least 100 km². A second critical feature of sub-basin delineations is the way the sub-basins are grouped or coded to allow for the creation of nested sub-basins at different scales, or to navigate within the sub-basin network from up- to downstream.
