It was my first winter in Vancouver and I went up with my friend M to go snowboarding. It was early in the season and they only had a few runs open. Still, we had a blast, staying till closing. \n\nThe moment I remember most was our last run. We took our time at the top, enjoying the view. Grouse Mountain looks over the entire Greater Vancouver area below it. And as we sat up there, we watched the city awash in these warm oranges, reds and yellows. \n\nFor me, particularly in this moment, seeing the city and living here felt fresh and alive. Vancouver always felt like a frontier to me; the northern-most city before vast stretches of nature. This place was a playground that began the process of separating the expectations I felt growing up in a middle class, high achieving, academically competitive, suburban town at the edges of silicon valley with what motivated, inspired and excited me deep inside. Reconnecting with this quiet voice inside of me that wished to be heard.\n---\nFour years later, with my time in this city coming to an end, I planned another trip up here. With J and M, we picked up some chinese pastries, BBQ pork buns and pineapple buns, to share at the top. We took the Grouse Grind, a steep hiking path that takes you up to the top. \n\nI don’t remember the details of the hike up but I remember reaching the top, breaking out of the forested tree-line and seeing the view. The day was peaceful and happy, with slight melancholic undertones knowing it would be the last time for a while. We sat at the chalet, enjoying the view and eating the pastries. At some point, I stepped out onto the deck while J and M continued chatting. \n\nMy eyes tried to take in every detail, carefully tracing the various neighborhoods down below, slowly replaying the memories. Eventually, I peeled myself away from the view and returned inside. I could sense that J and M knew that was a special moment for me. A chapter of my life that in some ways, I’m still peeling back the layers on.","text":"Grouse Mountain","locked":false,"position":null,"size":null,"color":"#448C2A","rotation":null,"textAlign":null,"attributes":[],"strokeOpacity":null,"label":null,"clipSource":null,"coordinates":[49.375702,-123.091015],"author":"d3b01965-008d-4153-b3e0-ab48e2d7d4bb","mapImageId":null,"parentId":"2beec9c1-5bad-4dc7-8c68-25fd1239ec1c","isHidden":null,"radiusDisplayAngle":90,"frame":null,"hideFromLegend":null,"fillOpacity":null,"routeMode":null,"strokeStyle":null,"onClick":null,"showEndcaps":null,"widthScale":1,"showLength":null,"opacity":null,"textStyle":null,"scale":null,"symbol":"dot","radius":null,"id":"2ca0d214-4aac-4ea4-a546-c19d08a38634","isCollapsed":null,"radiusDisplayUnit":null,"icon":null,"ordering":1703902985771928,"hasLongDescription":true,"isTextHidden":null,"type":"Place","createdAtUnixTimeMs":1711190557000,"renderHoles":null,"zoom":null,"showArea":null},{"strokeWidth":null,"mapLinkId":null,"showLinkPreview":null,"showRadius":null,"description":null,"text":"Crater Lake","locked":false,"position":null,"size":null,"color":"#448C2A","rotation":null,"textAlign":null,"attributes":[],"strokeOpacity":null,"label":null,"clipSource":{},"coordinates":[42.895609,-122.133977],"author":"d3b01965-008d-4153-b3e0-ab48e2d7d4bb","mapImageId":null,"parentId":"2beec9c1-5bad-4dc7-8c68-25fd1239ec1c","isHidden":null,"radiusDisplayAngle":90,"frame":null,"hideFromLegend":null,"fillOpacity":null,"routeMode":null,"strokeStyle":null,"onClick":null,"showEndcaps":null,"widthScale":1,"showLength":null,"opacity":null,"textStyle":null,"scale":null,"symbol":"dot","radius":null,"id":"725b093f-5a97-4fe8-940d-489e8f615dd7","isCollapsed":null,"radiusDisplayUnit":null,"icon":null,"ordering":1702554808563427,"hasLongDescription":false,"isTextHidden":null,"type":"Place","createdAtUnixTimeMs":1705199541000,"renderHoles":null,"zoom":null,"showArea":null},{"strokeWidth":null,"mapLinkId":null,"showLinkPreview":null,"showRadius":null,"description":"On a whim one evening, I decided to take one of the train lines to its final stop in a city called Pungol. Near the station was this beautiful and vast open-air mall. The structure molded itself to the rocky, multi-tiered environment that it had been built upon. Comfortably designed seating areas in various organic shapes peppered the main pathways. Everywhere, families and friends gathered around to enjoy the various foods being sold at the nearby stalls.\n\nPassing through the structure, I found myself on the other side staring at a river snaking around the perimeter. At the edge of the river was a parallel walking and bike path with rows of bikes you could rent. I grabbed one and started down the path following the river.\n\nAt this point, the sun was low in the air and the whole waterway was bathed in soft oranges and reds. What was a humid and hot day became this comfortable warm night air. Various bridges stretched across the river. Some went straight across, others poked out into the rive in a U-shape or Z-shape before returning to the same side. Groups of people strolled together taking photos on the bridges.\n\nAs the sun set further, lanterns along the bridges began to illuminate, their light reflecting off the river below. \n\nWhy has this memory stayed with me? I guess because the whole place had a certain charm for me. Seeing the families and friends enjoying themselves in this beautiful park, I could imagine myself making a life there. The plan at first was to go halfway up then back down; but something got into us. Woefully unprepared, when we got to the halfway point, and without saying anything, we just kept going. It went mostly unspoken at that moment that we were going to try to summit.\n\nThe second half was windy and cold, we were biking through clouds. Our hands were freezing and we were dressed thinly with only a bottle of water each. I remember that last mile, my legs sore and burning. The bike slowly moving forward inch by inch. We were greeted at the top to little fanfare. The top was covered in a cloud.\n\nPerhaps the best part of the ride was the descent. In downhill sports, I love the adrenaline of picking up speed, and so I allowed the bike to carry me down at increasing speeds. Leaning into the turns.
