Includes an account of Attucks' escaped from his enslaver in Framingham, Massachusetts and renders, in full, the runaway ad placed in the Boston Gazette by slaveholder Deacon William Brown. After his escape, Attucks went on to become a sailor and whaler.":1,"A narrative biography of a 19-year-old runaway named Elizabeth (or Betsy) Blakeley who escaped from North Carolina to Boston by stowing away in a coast vessel with her infant. Blakeley landed in Boston in January 1850 [a dangerous time, due to being prior to the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act] and was taken in by Abolitionists. The story details that Blakeley attended anti-slavery meetings at Faneuil Hall in the company of well-known abolitionists. Through networks of The Underground Railroad, Blakeley escaped to Canada. ":1,"A narrativized biographical account of Crispus Attucks, an Afro-Indigenous man who was martyrized as the first \"American\" killed by British soldiers while its band marched through State Street on March 5, 1770 at what would become the Boston Massacre---this event is one that captured public opinion and ignited the official start of the American Revolution. Attucks' death is posed as service to the country by the writer, effectively regarding Attucks as a de-facto solider. In this narrative, it is unknown whether Attucks was free or a runaway at the time of his murder. Attucks is recognized with a monument in Boston Common, unveiled in 1888. ":1,"A narrativized biographical account of Sojourner Truth (born Isabella Baumfree), a formerly enslaved Black woman, abolitionist, evangelical, and women's rights activist. Truth was born into slavery in upstate New York and escaped with her infant daughter to freedom in 1826. Truth returned later to retrieve her son Peter, who had been resold into slavery in the South following the institution's abolition in the North; fighting this in court, Truth is the first Black woman to go to court against a white man and win the case. The story makes brief mention of Sojourner Truth's time in Boston---presumably, on the abolition circuit working alongside figures like Frederick Douglass amongst others. Specifically referenced is Truth's famous statement \"Frederick, Is God dead?\"---her rumored reply to one of Douglass' speeches. The location in which this exchange occurred is widely debated; in THE BROWNIES' BOOK the writer records it occurring in Boston. However, further research and Douglass' own statement indicate that the event more than likely transpired elsewhere outside of Boston. Despite this narrative there is, at present, no record of Truth being in Boston at this time. However, Truth did reside in Florence, Massachusetts for a time and there are extensive records of her work there. Florence, MA instead of Boston, MA is included as a data point on the map for this reason.":1,"A narrativized biography of Frederick Douglass, a famous United States African American abolitionist, circuit speaker, and writer who escaped slavery with the help of his future wife Anna Murray (a free Black woman). Douglass is renowned for becoming a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York. He's particularly emphasized in Massachusetts histories, having lived in serveral cities in the metro-Boston area--including New Beford, a free settlement and Lynn---and having spoken at several locations on what's now regarded as the Boston Freedom trail. He later moved to New York to begin publishing his abolitionist newspaper The Liberator, after being discouraged from starting the publication in Boston. ":1,"A narrativized biography of Frederick Douglass, a famous United States African American abolitionist, circuit speaker, and writer who escaped slavery with the help of his future wife Anna Murray (a free Black woman). He's particularly emphasized in Massachusetts histories, having lived in several cities in the metro-Boston area--including New Bedford, a free settlement and Lynn---and having spoken at several locations on what's now regarded as the Boston Freedom trail. He later moved to New York to begin publishing his abolitionist newspaper The Liberator, after being discouraged from starting the publication in Boston. Of note, are the several Massachusetts locations in which Douglass lived or held events as well as organizations which Douglass found himself part of including: the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society. The biography also notes Douglass' activities during the Civil War, particularly efforts to the 54th Massachusetts Regiment of Colored Troops who would later be led by Harriet Tubman to free over 700 enslaved persons in South Carolina at what is now known as the Combahee Ferry Raid. Tubman and the regiment's work stand as the first-ever successful military operation led by a woman, and the only operation Black woman during the Civil War. Following Tubman, hundreds of enslaved persons who were liberated at Combahee River in South Carolina went on to join the 54th regiment. Unfortunately, the biography credits the successful Combahee Ferry Raid to regiment members and Colonel Shaw (advising officer), rather than Tubman. This is not so much an Editorial error as much as it is a---likely, unintentional---erasure of Harriet Tubman's labor and leadership. It is unknown whether Tubman's efforts were public knowledge (at least, widely) at the time of publication. In fact, Harriet Tubman's various positions, roles, and influence remain unknown in most current teachings of United States histories and Black American history. Editors selected Paul Cuffee---a Black sailor, abolitionist, and businessman little known in contemporary research---as a figure whose story to highlight. ":1,"Cover Drawing for the July 1920 issue of TBB. The image depicts three males young, middle-aged, and elderly (left to right) each saluting, and attired in uniforms suggesting military service. In the background is the Crispus Attucks Monument (located in Boston, MA Boston Commons). The cover suggests a genealogical lineage of Black military service and a pronounced goal to honor Black servicemen. \"\nThis issue is themed around generational service in the American national military; the cover memorializes Crispus Attucks, the first person killed in the Boston massacre (and thus, the first killed in the American revolution). “The Children’s Manual” is akin to a starter-guide (complete with kids dressed in their roles) for gendered national patriotism and military service—soldiers for young boys, and nursing for young girls. \"":1,"Referenced in a narrativized biography of Phillis Wheatley Peters, a famous United States African American poet who was kidnapped from West Africa, sold into slavery in the British colony of Boston, Massachusetts to a wealthy, white merchant family [the Wheatleys]. The story begins with the young girl's capture from West Africa and ends with a meditation of Wheatley Peters accomplishments. Her passing and funeral details were announced in the Independent Chronicle. Briefly discussed is the location of Phillis Wheatley Peters' funeral location in Boston, Mass. at a house \"lately improved by Mr. Todd, nearly opposite Dr. [Charles] Bulfinch's at West Boston.\" Charles Bulfinch was responsible for the design of Boston Common and the redesign of Fanueil Hall, amongst other Boston locations.
